Mel Kipper said that JJM was picked to high in the draft So were Penix Jr. and Nix. Does Mel Kiper Jr. think the Vikings should have picked Dallas Turner at 11 and waited for JJ McCarthy to magically drop to pick 23?Β I'm glad we snagged him when we did,or he would be off the board to someone else. Mel Kipper can go pound sand.

Kiper projected JJM to the Vikes at 5 and was all over JJM until the Vikes drafted him at 10.

Don't know if this has been pointed out before, but watched some game video and this throw stood out to me. At the 3:10 point, he makes a TD pass from his own 43 to the goal line, 57 yards in the air. But it's pretty much on a rope, not much arc to it at all. I don't know how many NFL quarterbacks ever could make a throw like that. From what I've seen, a pass that long always has more air under it to get that far. Pretty impressive. JJ McCarthy vs TCU Fiesta Bowl

Those who claim he cannot out run defenders and isn't really a good runner are bonkers and need only to see that play to get a grasp of what he can do let alone several others in that game. He was under duress for a lot of that game and he found ways to get rid of the ball, find a receiver, or scramble to get out of it. The pass right before the 3:10 mark is unreal by the way. That needle the threaded in there was freaking amazing and Kirk Cousin-esque

I recall that there was a report before the draft that described McCarthy as a more athletic version of Cousins.

It includes the fact that he seems to not try βloft/arcβ throws (where you throw the football with a wrist flick that is a bit more basketball-ish) which is helpful to a wr who has 1:1 coverage in the red zone - either to get it over the defender in front of the wr or, if the receiver has a size advantage, to make it more a jump ball. still, even in that rough outing, the talent is pretty evident.

I agree, the two pick sixes probably cost them the game. That was end of 2022 season, he certainly cleaned up the turnovers in 2023. Some of the throws show elite arm talent though, not just good. This video is all of his touchdowns. Quite a few throws he has some touch on the ball, floats it to make it easy for the receiver. In the Fiesta Bowl game TCU had a good defense and Michigan got behind early. I think McCarthy felt the pressure and was fireballing everything. JJ McCarthy every touchdown

Roo -
What say you about the comments regarding JJ McCarthy not being able to throw downfield accurately?
I know you watched his every snap and I have several co-workers and friends who claim that to be a true statement. Plenty of great analysis and videos posted in Armageddon as well as on the web to see the good and the bad (as well as actual live and taped game film) and I am just not seeing the issue as that pronounced. What am I missing?

Don't know if this has been posted in another thread but didn't see it in this one. Interesting to hear his own comments in a few spots; he talks after his one (and only) loss and handled it pretty awesome:
Cowherd is so completely wrong on his comments I wonder if he's talking about the same quarterback. "Ball dies, can't throw without his feet set, etc." Throwing off-schedule and arm strength are things McCarthy excels at.

Interesting to hear his own comments in a few spots; he talks after his one (and only) loss and handled it pretty awesome: Love the videos. Keep βem coming. Something I have not ever seen or read about JJM either is that he throws the ball off script and catches defenders off guard. Something I say to my boys about their sports, from hockey, to soccer, to basketball, football, etc that the easiest way to score is to catch the opponent off guard. When the goalie/defender isnβt ready, itβs the best opportunity for you to fire a shot past him as well as the defenders. This is why Mahomes has been so successful as he plays the game how we all want to and did play growing up and itβs not the particular Xβs and Oβs and black and white everyone thinks is necessary. Iβm truly all in on this kid and am so stoked for him to get started with our offense. I do want him to start when it makes sense, but heβs a gamer and going to find ways to be successful. I think we may have found our QB of the future and I couldnβt more existed to get this thing going. It may not always be flashy, but neither was Bradyβs 7 rings or Eli Manning or Peyton Manning, Nick Foles, etc, etc. You donβt have to be flashy as a QB, you need to manage the game, understand whatβs in front of you, prepare, lead, improvise, and trust your guys to take chances. Mahomes has been successful through being a master of improvisation and trusting his instincts. Has it always been successful? Hell no, and this fan base has to accept that. But he keeps trying and doesnβt deviate from his instincts to find ways to win. Iβm so ready to shut these negative pundits up. I would love nothing more than to give the finger to Tiki Barber on his comments about the Giants and how he would basically disown them if they selected McCarthy because he thinks heβs a terrible QB. Itβs time for the Vikings to shine and become a winner and become a dynasty.

OK, here's another. At the end he mentions playing hockey, first I heard that:

I wanted to see where he played hockey growing up so checked Wikipedia. Interesting thing about Ohio State in there. Seems like a guy you don't want to piss off because he'll pay you back!
"McCarthy was a five-star recruit in the 247Sports Composite Rankings, which aggregates the ratings of the major recruiting services. At age 16, McCarthy said Ryan Day "lied to my face" by telling him in March that Ohio State would not take a quarterback in the 2021 recruiting class until the end of the summer, but then accepted a commitment from Kyle McCord in April. Despite growing up an Ohio State fan, McCarthy committed to rival Michigan the next month. Speaking about his new hatred of Ohio State, he said, "I used to love them. Now I want to kill them."
McCarthy played hockey growing up and said that was actually his first love, not football. Around his freshman year of high school, he made the decision to give up hockey in order to focus on football. McCarthy called it "one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make."
