I saw in one forum that someone was claiming that McCarthy was catastrophic in the title game. He went 10 of 18 - not good - so I went to YouTube and pulled a video of his throws from that game . What do I see in the vid? 3 βshould have been caughtβ balls - either plain old drops or drop-adjacent. 2 or 3 cathchable balls, but would have been contested catches - maybe bad placement or maybe just good coverage. One batted down at the line. 1-2 off targetsβ¦ but even then you donβt know if it was a wr-qb miscommunication. re-confirms my thoughts that his WRs were pedestrian at best - the size-speed guy seems like has a bit of upside as a 5th or 6th round flier, the smaller slightly faster guy who some project to round 2 or 3 I would put a round 7 grade on. Anyway, still do have some concerns about arm strengthβ¦ although it might be more about how low he often releases the ball and trajectories that I donβt like. I know that he can put zip on it, but range on the ball, how much he seems to need to βforceβ the throw with full body vs. flicking - I get the concerns and share them. But arms keep getting stronger into late 20s.

But arms keep getting stronger into late 20s. Watching this and other "highlights" (notice that rarely are the "lowlights" ever uploaded) I see a quick release and decent decision making. I also see some issues with footwork when he's pressured. Correctable but some happy feet at times. Arm strength stuff is a product of watching too much of the combine. His arm is fine. QB from college to the NFL is the largest jump in pro sports by a good margin. Nothing to project here... it's all going to be on how he can adapt to playing against the best in the world.

Funny thing is everyone talks about lack of tape/information on him.
* More snaps under center then all 5 of the other top 6 combined on tape.
* More play action snaps then all the others on tape.
* has played in a 12, 13, 21, 22 personnel style NFL type offense.
* threw to receivers running pro route concepts
Believe he played vs 4 top 20 defenses last year? (Only Daniels comes close to that)
Besides Caleb and Drake everyone else had issues when they were JJM age and were not good at age 20.
Never had to carry his team they say, but Michigan doesn't beat Bama without him.
Let me add character wise he is the lowest risk prospect in this draft. Vikings will get 100% effort from him!

This is why people struggle trying to figure out QBs. There are so many tangibles and intangibles that they just don't consider. They look at stats, "eye chart", and flash, which is why we still have that dumb combine. IMO, JJM will be the leader for this offense that so many have been wanting forever.

Mel Kipper said that JJM was picked to high in the draft So were Penix Jr. and Nix. Does Mel Kiper Jr. think the Vikings should have picked Dallas Turner at 11 and waited for JJ McCarthy to magically drop to pick 23?
