Buxton leads off the 9th with a screaming double. Arraez still having problems at the plate pops out but Garver got a 4 pitch walk leading to a pitching change with Marwin coming up next.
Romo in the BP warming up so it look's like it will be his game to get the save. Another run would be nice to give Romo some cushion.
Marwin comes thru and hits and opposite field liner that nearly went through but nicely cut of by the LF to hold Marwin to a single but advanced Garver to 3rd. All it will take is a sac fly to make it 3-0.

3 run shot to near dead center by Kepler. Twins 5-0.
0-0 yesterday (4 walks, a sac fly and a run scored). That's the weirdest stat line I've ever seen for a hitter.

Yep. Romo sits down and Alcala, who pitched the other night making his 1st big league appearance showing some real talent (96 mph FB with good off speed stuff) after getting over the jitters to the 1st 2 hitters he faced, is in to finish the game.

Bummer. Alcala was looking so good (bumped his FB up a notch to 97-98 mph and his slider/change up was coming in nicely at 87 mph) but after issuing a 1 out walk he grooved a a 2-2 FB right over the heart of the plate that the Pirates hitter crushed to dead center for a 2 run HR. Ended the inning, however, with a SO.
Needs to work on his consistency, but this kid has some serious talent.
Just checked Alcala out not having heard his name as one of the Twins better prospects. It turns out that the Twins picked him in a trade in 2018 with the Astros shipping out Ryan Pressley who I was not overly impressed with when he was with the Twins. Pressely has had 2 good years with the 'stros (better than with the Twins) but he's 32 while this kid is 25, has a much higher ceiling than Pressley and the potential to become a upper echelon MLB pitcher. Kudos to the Twins scouting department for spotting Alcala's potential.

3-3 Another matinee game??
Maeda gave up a 3 run HR to Polanco (Pirates RF) to knot the score.

And with 1 swing, (Buxton HR to dead center), Twins re-take the lead.

Kepler went down in a lot of pain after fouling a pitch off hitting his shin just above the ankle. But, he's a trooper and finished the AB hitting a routine FO to center. Baldeli would be well advised to pull him from the game so the trainer can work on it immediately.

Baldeli left Kepler in the game and maybe it was a good thing. After Maeda fanned the 1st 2, Polanco (again for the Pirates) hit a laser to RF that Kepler snared over his shoulder using to height to make the catch. Otherwise, that would have been an easy double.

Rosario 2 out HR to RC that barely made it over the wall.
5-3 Twins

Maeda settled down after the 3rd, in which he gave up 2 straight followed by the 3 run HR, to retire 12 Pirates in a row.
Clippard in to start the bottom of the 7th. Gave up a 1 out single but threw well (splitter was particularly effective) and had 2 SO's.
