They also had plans in motion for quarterbacks coaches Josh McCown and Grant Udinski to be in Ann Arbor for Michigan QB J.J. McCarthyβs pro day this Friday. Minnesota also arranged a private workout on campus with McCarthy for next week, with OβConnell and Adofo-Mensah set to make that trip.

McCarthy makes me nervous but probably most realistic as I think Pats will want a ridiculous amount for pick #3. Regardless, even if McCarthy is the guy and heβs a bust itβll be nice to finally see the Vikings take a swing to find a franchise guy again.

Obvious due diligence. I imagine they do the same with at least the four top QB prospects.

I would expect them to do due diligence on all the top 4 also, but I suspect Maye and JJM are the targets. I mean the Bears are going to take Williams and everything so far points toward Daniels to Washington so that really means the ball is in the Patriots court.

Please don't overpay for a guy that has question marks, had great players and coach around him and didn't need to throw a high volume of passes. A mistake giving this much to move up will set this team back years. Unless you get a franchise guy, then fill other holes.

Assuming Williams is not an option....I think McCarthy is QB 1A and Maye is QB 1B on the Vikings ticket.

A mistake giving this much to move up will set this team back years. Unless you get a franchise guy, then fill other holes. Funny thing JJM might have the least amount of question marks. Daniels and Maye both are bad under pressure. Less effective in passing situations like 3rd and long. Did not play the hardest schedule of the 4 last year. Did not play in pro style offenses. The bigget question mark with Daniels is if he can function in an NFL offense and if his team will create an offense for him to be his most effective in like a Ravens or Eagles plan with their QB's. Maye has huge upside, but he was less efficient by almost every measure except clean pocket plays. Actually could be argued Daniels has a question mark because he played with the best group of WR's by a long shot of the lot (Think LSU has 2 guys projected to be 1st rd next year at WR). Question mark on JJM is that he played in an offense that did not ask him to throw high volume even though his 3rd year stats were better then Daniels. I am fine with any of the 3, but it is funny how the goal line keeps moving for you guys. First it was weak arm and to small and he is bigger surprise surprise then his recruited weight and threw 61 MPH ball. In many ways JJM is the safest pick of the 3 and they all have the same big question of if they can translate to the NFL game. JJM is the quickest decision maker and best under pressure of the 3. Maye has super hero type talent. Daniels can run like the wind and throws a nice deep ball. Daniels has the weakest arm of the 3 and freezes under pressure. Maye has decision making issues and trouble under pressure. JJM did not play in a high volume passing offense.

Please don't overpay for a guy that has question marks ... Problem is all rookie QBs have question marks ... even 'sure things' like Caleb can quickly turn into an RG3.

Please don't overpay for a guy that has question marks ... Problem is all rookie QBs have question marks ... even 'sure things' like Caleb can quickly turn into an RG3. When it comes to QB's there are many factors: Competitiveness, Temperament/Emotional Strength, Confidence, Play Under Pressure, Ability to Read Defenses, Size, Accuracy, Arm Strength, Touch, Leadership, Feel for the Game, Anticipation and then you go into all the other factors like Coaching, System, Organization, Supporting Cast. While he has the least amount of usage of the bunch, I think McCarthy maybe checks the most boxes...particularly in the things you can't coach. Williams and Maye are probably more natural throwers of the ball, but I question Williams' Temperament/Emotional Strength and his Leadership. He's a bit aloof and that doesn't always win over your teammates. And Maye has not performed well under pressure and his ability to read defenses is a real ?. It's kind of Ironic when you look at these 4, none are really similar. If you looked at the circular chart they put together that highlights strengths and weaknesses, none would look the same, but I think JJ's chart would show the fewest low spots.

I am starting to wonder if all this McCarthy steam is a smokescreen. It either is or Kwesi has a trade in place that will be announced on draft night. Kind of odd that all of their meetings and such with him have been so public. Maye would probably be close behind him in terms of how much "interest" the Vikings have in him.
Part of me wonders if maybe they are wanting to make an aggressive play for Daniels or if it's just a foregone conclusion, league wide, that he's a Commander.

Caleb is going #1 and Washington is not moving out. Vikings have been interested in McCarthy for a while. Kwesi and whole scouting side went to Michigan practices and a game last fall. They have pretty much by the early trade they did said they are happy with any of the 3 they can get Daniels, Maye, or JJM. If there is a smoke screen it is the Giants with the will they wont they on wanting one of the 4... Vikings have made it crystal clear they are willing to move up and draft one of these guys and presumably any of the 3.

I watched some you tube highlights of Maye and JJM ( I know not the best way to scout QBs) and had some observations.
1) Maye throws a sweet long ball (50-55 yards) but he does have a hitch in his throwing motion kind of like Josh Allen. Not sure if that is a concern. 2) almost all of Mayes highlights were from very clean pockets where he had a lot of time to throw. 3) Maye is mobile but not particularly fast. Heβs a cheetah compared to Kirk but is a bit heavy footed. 4) very few highlights of Maye throwing on the run. 5) very few highlights of JJM completing deep balls. He has a strong arm and throws darts in the intermediate routes( 15-25 yards) but Iβm not sure he scares anyone deep. 6) JJM is very quick footed and throws great on the run. 7) JJM is very fast and athletic. Teams will have to game plan for his legs more so than Maye.
So I donβt know. Maye looks like the better pure pocket passer but JJM looks better at extending a play and making something out of nothing. I look at Maye and see Josh Allen. I look at JJM and see a more athletic Drew Brees. Iβm fine with either one.
