In May, there was a mini-controversy when NBC Sports Bay Areaβs Matt Maiocco said the former Panther βmight be ... the most talented thrower of the football that the 49ers have ever had.β Shanahan didn't disagree. βI donβt think thatβs a big controversial statement,β Shanahan told reporters in May. βSamβs an unbelievable thrower. He was born to do that.β On safer ground, Shanahan added that Darnold wasn't exactly handled carefully by his previous coaching staffs, an unquestionably true statement. βI truly see Sam talent-wise as a top pick in the draft, just like he was,β Shanahan added. βYou watch his whole career and thereβs no reason to think differently. He hasnβt been in the best situations, so weβre glad to have him here.β www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/kyle-shanahan-loves-sam-darnold-steve-young-18264638.php

I think there are truths to both sides. On one side I don't think anyone has ever questioned his ability to throw the ball. On the other side, he's never shown the ability to read a defense which is why he struggles. I think Shanny is correct he's been in awful spots prior to last year in SF. But if Shanny thought he was the most talented thrower he's had, and that coaching was only problem....then he wouldn't be our QB right now, he'd be replacing Purdy who everyone has come to terms with is good, but not much more than a game manager.
I hope KOC can work wonders with the guy, but if reading defenses and the part of the game between the ears is the problem, this doesn't appear to be a great fit as KOC runs one of the most demanding QB offenses in the league. Hopefully KOC can fix what 3 other head coaches couldn't!

I havenβt been on much. Came on to see how bad signing Darnold would be getting blasted. personally I would have rather we gone with minchew. But not sure if he fits our system or not. i just hope that we strike gold in the draft. no one knows how any rookie qb will do purdy was last player drafted. Outplaying those in front him. darnold was the third player picked stunk so far. Outside of Tarkenton our first round picks I recall. culpepper. Ponder. Bridgewater maybe second round. Ponder stunk. We can go countless first round picks at qb real. Green Bay looks like they struck gold 3x. Favre, Rodgers, love. Our turn to strike gold The only QB's the Vikings have picked 1st round Kramer (27th), Culpepper (11th), Ponder (12th) and Bridgwater (32nd). Tarkenton was a 3rd rounder (29th pick).

He is a bridge qb and he is cheap. He is only 26. Maybe he matured with his experience. They are going to draft a qb and not some low round dude

Thanks for refreshing my mind. Tarkenton is my Minn favorite.Culpepper was good but short. Kramer had some good games. I loved Teddy as a person never felt he would carry us to a championship..ponder stunk. But Tarkenton is our one big star. Green Bay had Starr, Favre, Rogerβs, and now love is showing potential. unfortunately no matter where you draft. Even if in top 10. It doesnβt guarantee a QB fix How many would have loved drafting David Carr manzel Bortles brady quinn J Russell Matt Lienhart vince young ,Cade McNown marriota there are many other first round busts,no for sure things we signed Darnold, jets drafted one top 3I believe. mocks show us having to move up to grab our qb choice. It may end up Pennix, or oregons qb might be b the best pick long term. i just hope the best pick falls in our laps. heck Kurt arner wasnβt drafted, purdy last pick

I see Darnold as a low risk HIGH reward option.
He is only 26 and was put in terrible situations.
Redbird on multiple times lately has raised a good point. Some of these QBs that bust were put in horrible situations. No doubt once you fail and begin to doubt yourself it is hard to rebound.
I don't know of anyone that drew a worse straw than Darnold. Washington was and is a joke, the best WRs on the Jets were career backups. The Jets hired Adam Gase to develop him and IMHO Gase is a fkn idiot.
Darnold is likely a bridge QB but I am looking forward to seeing him play.
A couple of will work in his favor. He has a fantastic arm. He just had Shanahan. He now will have KOC and McNown who played with him once. He will have MUCH better weapons.
Unlikely he will completely resuscitate his career but a few QBs that were left for dead or very doubted.

I know some of the QBs I listed may have failed as they generally go to lousy teams, bad situations like I believe David Csrr, constantly sacked, probably shell shocke
I am a crimson Tide fan.
Bryce Young went first pick. Questionable choice seasons end. Is young another bust or is it just being on a bad team. Bad o line, wrs not a strength, not sure the running game.
at least the Vikings have a decent line, we have WS,a top TE and hopefully Jones will improve the running game.
Dsrnold should have no excuse and a qb drafted should have a fair chsnce

I admit I never watched Sam play so I only have highlights from internet searches. Heβs looks more mobile than cousins, not by a huge amount but he is more mobile. He looks like he can make nfl throws and can hit a tight window while moving.
So like MANY times before we will see if he is going to succeed or be a foot note like many qb we have put in purple.
Like him or not letβs see what he can do. 2024 is not a year we will contend for championship with Sam or without.

The Fiction Section Of The Library started beating a drum that the Falcons clearly tampered the Cousins negotiations.
If the NFL decides to do anything look into it and fine the Falcons a pick... does that go to MN since they were the offended party? Or, does the NFL simply shorten the draft?

Iβm not as pessimistic as most here re Darnold. Heβs got all the physical traits you look for and can make all the throws. I dont believe ANYONE would have succeeded in NY or Carolina and I really dont think you can hold that against him. Further, heβs had a year to get the ghosts out of his head and regain some confidence. Iβm not feeling so bad about it.
Go Darnold. Go Vikes.

Let's make a running bet on how many games into the season before Darnold is benched? π

6 years in and 26. Big time arm talent. This is a pretty nice move. As long as he takes what is given he will succeeded and since we have a better overall offense than the Jets and Carolina his success is on his shoulders.

No sour grapes because I agree that KAM could have kept him if he wanted. But as Florito noted... Cousins said the silent part out loud and the NFL has penalized teams for tampering in the past. I think every team tampers with FA's; I'm just curious what happens to the pick if a team gets caught and penalized.
