Next year it will be interesting to see how things play out with the salary cap. If Smith has a good year and avoids injury, makes sense for him to hit the market and get that one (probably) last big contract. Vikings could franchise him too. I don't think a lot of people know Thielen restructured to get his cap hit under $6M for this year. Next year, it goes up huge to almost $17M. With Cousins cap number increasing another $14M those two players eat up all of the projected $25M overall team increase for '22. I predict, short of a Superbowl win, Cousins is traded. Vikings may have to eat some of his salary in order to get fair compensation but there's only $10M in dead money with a trade. If they cut him, the whole $$45Mβ’ is dead money so that won't happen. Harrison Smith on contract: Going to see what we can do

Cousins will be the starter next year too, maybe even beyond if the new guy doesnβt show well.

They are currently $5.4M below next years cap... that is light years ahead of where they started the last two offseasons.

Boy I sure hope we can win it all this year. Because next year we are gonna lose some guys again probably.
Barr, Smith, Pat Pete, Richardson, Breeland, Woods, Alexander, O'Neal free agents.
And Hunter's new contract
Hunter and O'Neal have to be number one and two on the list. Smith is 3rd, even at his age.
Corner problem again in 2022.

Wrong sport, wrong picture, if you want something similar, here you go. And Mauer was a singles hitter, until he wanted to get paid, then he pulled the ball to get paid and then went back to being Joey ground ball. Harrison is a stud.

This was for the infatuation of Cousins and his contract. Some Twins' fans had the same morbid obsession with Mauer and his contract.

That 2022 number doesn't include Harrison Smith or Brian O'Neill since their contracts are up after this year. Are you assuming they're gone? It also doesn't include any of the one year contract players from this year (Peterson, etc.). All of them gone too? Looking ahead big picture it's going to be tight. A big contract or two have to go, a certain quarterback being the big fish. My prediction is Cousins traded (unless SB win) so we'll see.

To work a trade someone would need to take Cousins and his contract, or else a trade does nothing to help the cap. Which teams do you see that would be willing to take on a $35M contact for Cousins?

Past that, the Vikings will have 100+ million in cap space in 2023 with only Bradbury and Irv Smith Jr as the only meaningful FAβs. Iβd say there is a small possibility they move Cousins; but, I believe they are responsible for 10 million in bonus and may need to eat another 10 million in salary to consummate a deal.

With a good showing....there will be plenty of takers. Just because his cap is 45 doesn't mean it costs a team 45. Cash spend is 35 and as a QB he is actually in his prime these days. He's durable and I expect he'll post a great showing this year with better line play. Everyone always has the the "grass is greener" mentality. But in reality, he has taken his teams as far as many other high profile QB's since coming here and with way worse line play around him. When was the last time Rodgers went to a SB? Wilson? How many championship games or SB's has Dak gotten to, Stafford or Watson? Yep....same as Kirk.

I agree they may need to eat some of his salary but the $10M in dead money is not that bad. Which teams would be interested in taking on his salary? Hard to say now, but all it would take is an injury to a stud QB on a competitive team. Also, a retirement or just bad QB play could get a team enamored with Cousins. He also could restructure if he wants to move.

How many championship games or SB's has Dak gotten to, Stafford or Watson? 1. Kirk has won a 1 playoff game in his entire career 2. He hit FA and was able to hand pick his landing spot... 1 playoff appearance in 3 years 3. Keenum took the Vikings farther in the playoffs in a single postseason than Cousins has gone in his entire career 4. OL has been a long standing problem... but the defense he played with in 2018-2019 made up for that shortcoming
