Anything close to $40mm a year guaranteed for a good but not great QB when he will be 36 and 37 years old is not a discount. Thanks, Kirk. Good luck in FA in 2024.

What are the Two things Kirk Cousins cannot escape from?
1. A pass rush up the middle 2. Father Time.
These are the two obvious upgrades the organization wants in the next guy in thereβ¦β¦whenever that is!

Bottom line is KC wonβt be here in 2024 unless he takes what the Vikes offer.
It also will loosen up his destinations for the no trade clause in his contract because he wants a permanent guaranteed home.
Advantage KAM.
Excellently played. The person that can walk away always has the advantage.

I can't imagine the money Cousins has accumulated. If I'm set for multiple generations, and it's no longer about money but about my legacy, I'm considering a bare minimum salary, freeing up space so the org can put pieces around me to make a serious run at a Super Bowl. Talk about locking in a seat at the table for all time...

Would you really work for minimum wage if you worked at one of the most dangerous jobs that can cause permanent disability and brain injury for legacy reasons? Thatβs us as fans talking. It a ridiculous idea when you take the money that he will be paid in your scenario and put it in context to what other people at his level makes.

The person that can walk away always has the advantage. Totally agree. I haven't liked all of KAM's moves but I like the way he handled the expensive older players. Kendricks cut. Adam cut. Harry, take a 50% pay cut or get cut. Kirk, no more multi year guaranteed extensions. Rick never had the balls to do this which is why we have a shit load of dead money to clean up the contracts that he gave to guys. We've been in a cap straight jacket since we signed Kirk and KAM is saying no mas. We're not going to start every year $20mm over the cap and be forced to sign 2nd tiers FAs out of the bargain bin. Which is why I wouldn't rule out a Hunter trade. If Hunter is walking in and asking for a 4 yr $90mm extension with $50mm guaranteed then he's as good as gone. We're cleaning the deck which I like but KAM then needs to draft better than he did in year 1.

Well, A) even at a reduced salary, we're not talking minimum wage; & B) yes I would consider it, because let's be clear again, money isn't an issue. He has money for generations and generations. I would want to win the ultimate prize, which is why I play the game. If I could be the quarterback that won an organization's first Super Bowl, you're dang right I would do it. He would go down in history...even to the point of being considered the best QB in franchise history. "You play...to win...the game"

"You play...to win...the game" You both bring up good points here, but I'm siding with brick for the most part. Firstly, if you milk the franchise to the point they can't afford to put great players around you, you're making the danger to yourself increase- particularly in a statuesque QB's case, losing out on top tier O-linemen. The extra money you squeeze out of the system tends to decrease your success rate. The benefits (of a concession in salary) on your post-football earning power and health would likely offset the reduced football earnings pretty quickly, in my view.

And I like to think I'd do the same. But c'mon, that's not how these guys are wired. They all want to win at everything they do, on and off the field. They compete over air time on GMFB, they compete for the top endorsements, they all want to have the highest player rating on this year's version of Madden... Contract size is just one of the many bragging rights they hold over each other. Brady taking about a 20% discount over market value for several years for the good of the team is the closest you're ever going to see to what you're talking about. And that's only because by that time he had more money than God and a wife that had even more money than him. I honestly think if a player that is in the $30-40 mil/year club took a minimum vet salary contract the Players Union would intervene, fearing some kind of coercion by the club or the player is not in their right mental state.
