I like Kirk more than most on this board but the idea that weβre screwed if he leaves after 2023 is laughable. The guy has been here 5 years and we have two playoff trips and one win. Yes, the defense has been ass the last two years but it was top 10 in Kirks first two seasons. Plus he had AT and Diggs and a young Cook and the best we could do was one play off win. KOC was hired to find a young QB of the future not to try and fix a 35 yr old QB. Can he do it? I have no idea but we wonβt find out by keeping Kirk around for another 3 years.
Iβm not saying we are screwed, Iβm saying him leaving after 23 puts KAM in a box he didnβt want or likely expect to be in.
This is my opinion only, but KAM came out aggressive in FA in 23 in FA signing Davenport and Murphy expecting Kirk could get extended on a 2 year deal lowering his cap in 23 and creating more space to fill holes while making a run at playoffs. He didnβt have a ton of Draft capital and this class of QBβs is riddled with ?βs. I think he expected he could fill a few more holes in Free agency with skulks cash savings and use his draft to pick up WR, CB, ILB while making a strong run. Then Draft a QB in 24 when heβd have more capital and a better draft class to work with.
Instead, heβs running out of cap, heβs going to need to draft a QB who either will be a long shot or heβll have to give up a ton of capital to move into top 10 to get a QB and that means heβll be unable to fill the holes via FA or Draft. Thatβs not an ideal situation.
The QB position has the highest failure rate of all draft pick positions. But the odds of getting a true franchise QB outside the 1st round is very low. Yea, people like Brady, Wilson , Cousins and a few others over the years have found success despite getting picked outside the 1st Round, but itβs a really low number that can do so.
I hope he gets it rightβ¦. But I highly doubt this is what he wanted. If he hadnβt wanted Kirk he wouldnβt have made a 2 year offer.
