Vikeroo , I hope Smith makes the team over Brothers because Brothers doesn't look like much more than a STs player You make it sound like Special Teams are not that important. Being a special teams stand-out is how most reserve LB's stay on teams. Think of Heath Farwell from about 10 years ago. Brothers is regarded as a very good special teams player. I've also read that the 4th and 5th WR will only make the team if they can also contribute on special teams (I think Bisi Johnson has a leg up on that).
Special teams players get on the field how many times a game?
I think its more important to have someone that can come in and fill the position if the starter gets hurt. But Smith didn't look the part last night either.

Special teams players can be on the field up to about plays per game. Gedeon was on the field on 31 ST plays in the Jets game and the away GB game last year. Thielen played mostly ST as a rookie, 10-20 snaps per game. He played 20 or more offensive snaps in only two games that year, and a bunch of games with 0-10 offensive snaps.
