A swap of firsts would be awesome but that seems too harsh. Everyone knew that Kirk was likely going to Atlanta if the Vikings did t resign him. The falcons definitely talked to Kirk before the window was open but did that really impact the Vikings? The Vikings had plenty of time to resign him and clearly didnβt want to hit his number. If the Falcons told Kirk a week before FA started that they were good at $100mm guaranteed, it didnβt really impact the Vikings thinking. My view is that the Vikings knew in the spring of 2023 that they were out on Kirk after the 2023 season. Maybe the league clips the Falcons a mid-round pick just for show. There was nothing from KOC to indicate they werenβt bringing him back this year so how you see them knowing in Spring of 23β he wasnβt coming back is a stretch. I think the plan was to bring him back until the very endβ¦ just maybe a disagreement on how long and at what price he could be had. I think the Salary Cap bump raised the bar more than Minny wanted to go. Point of it is if Cousins wanted to stay (which I think he did), tampering takes away the Vikings negotiating power. Because now Cousins knows what some other team will offer, it takes away Vikings ability to say hereβs our best offer, but it expires once the tampering period starts. Thatβs why itβs deemed against the rules. Teams have until the tampering period to negotiate unhindered by outside offers. They clearly violated it!
