Looks like Kene Nwangwu just got a new lease on life in the NFL! We all thought they were trying to get rid of the kick-off and they turn around and make it exciting again. www.nbcsports.com/fantasy/football/player-newsNFL owners voted to adopt the XFLβs kickoff rules for the 2024 season. Twenty-nine of the leagueβs 32 teams approved of the change, with the Niners, Packers, and Raiders voting against the rule adoption. Under the new rules, any kickoff that ends up in the βlanding zoneβ β between the goal line and the 20 yard line β must be returned. The changes will essentially stop touchbacks, which would award the ball at the 35 yard line. Once implemented, the hybrid kickoff will make kickoffs a far more important part of the game. NFL Networkβs Tom Pelissero said NFL officials hope the rule change can βwill yield what it wants: fewer injuries and more returnsβ in 2024 and beyond. 8h ago Source: Tom Pelissero

I would prefer they just put the ball at the 25 and eliminate the kickoff, they keep trying to make it safe and now make it more interesting, it all feels so forced, I also do not like seeing a game come down to a TD return on a kickoff.

I'm not sure how it's going to look; but, ST's is a critical part of the game and I appreciate the effort to try to keep Kickoffs a part of it.

I like how they made the kick off relevant again, but I don't like the proposed setup for 2 reasons.
1. There is basically one line of defense with everyone close together. A runner breaks through that and he's off to the races. There will be a lot of kick return TDs Im afraid now.
2. The rule penalizes kickers who kick deep (especially if you're kicking into the wind). You can score a TD with 20 seconds left and if your kick goes into the endzone the other team is now starting at the 35. You very well only need 22-25 yards to get a makeable FG attempt at that point

It sure makes the Steelers signing of Cordarelle Patterson looks smart. He could be pretty dangerous in that kickoff scenario if and when they elect to use him that way.

With the new rule, is there any need for 'gunners' anymore?

With the new rule, is there any need for 'gunners' anymore? Punt coverage As far as kickoff coverage goes; I am interested to see how different teams/coaches try to play it over the next couple of seasons.

Gunners are guys that can run and tackle.
They will be replaced by safety tacklers. I think teams will have 2 or 3 guys in the line drop back or hold back from the first wave.

I'm still kicking it out of the endzone if I'm the vikings.
