While it is assumed the Vikings will take a QB in the 1st Rd, anything is possible. I know there are many on the board jumping up and down over the off season moves and a few others like myself with more tempered expectations. So, assuming we are drafting a QB in this draft, where do posters see us in 24 and how long until people think we are in a position to make a run?
Here's my take:
24) With Detroit and Green Bay having gotten better in the offseason along with Chicago if Williams pans out, I don't see us competing in 24. We've made a lot of moves, but the reality is pre-draft we are a worse team than we were in 23 and despite the moves we've made there are still too many holes to be fixed in one off season (which is why you have seen me complain about overspending for talent). We have glaring holes at QB, G, NT, CB, K and we need to upgrade WR3, C, G2, DE, P and RB. That's not getting fixed in 1 draft/offseason.
25) Provided we get QB right in 2024 and improve our draft quality, 2025 has a shot to be competitive if our scouting and draft strategies have improved. But, we are not going to have many high picks unless we unload Jefferson, so we'd have to kill the 24 draft and be lucky enough to have the right FA's fall to us in areas of need with a lot of cap to spend. I think we'd be improved but doubt we have the chemistry to compete for a SB yet.
26) Assuming our drafts improve and we got QB right, I see this as the first year we would really be able to contend. But again, it will depend on our drafts. FAs typically are FAs for a reason. It's rare you are going to find All Pro talents in their primes in the FA market. More often than not you are likely to find players like Murphy last year who can be a solid player, but it's rare to find dominant players in FA. Once in awhile you get lucky, but not too often. We will need to hit some home runs in the draft the next 2 years to make this viable, but the most important component is going to be finding a QB this year that will be starting year 3.
While he drives me crazy with his play calling at times, I do think we have the best coaching staff in the division so that could swing things a bit quicker. KOC as a play caller is still a work in progress, but I think he's an outstanding game planner. One other wrinkle that I think could delay a rebuild would be the departure of Flores. His defense is rather unique and few coaches deploy that type of system, so I think a Flores departure could set us back as players brought in to thrive in his system may not be as good of a fit in a new scheme.
I really don't want to give up multiple 1sts to move up because of the holes we have, but given how scheme rigid KOC is I'd be shocked if we don't because Maye and McCarthy are the only two real fits for what KOC looks for in a QB, and of the 3 after Williams I think those are the two least likely to have a big fall. I'll go on record as saying if Daniels winds up being the pick....then there's trouble in paradise.
