We have a strong group of running backs. We know Cook and Mattison are locks, but selecting the next back to keep and who the FB will be will be tough.
I think Mattison will be used like Murrey was but will catch some more balls. #3 RB is going to come down to who is the best blocker because they all are good runners. I think Boone right now is that #3.
FB is no lock for Ham, Khari Blasingame looked pretty good as a blocker too.

Mattison got some tough yards against one of the best rush defenses in the league last year. I like his ability just to get tough yards. The number 3 is up for grabs but I agree Boone has shown he can make something happen.

Ham is an absolute lock... Blasingame might be a priority for the PS... Ham also has roles as a RB and 3rd down back that I am not sure Blasingame could fill...
Good for Boone on the big run, but that was vs deep-deepreserves... Abdullah has always had ball security issues...

Mattison barely got over 3 ypc. Boone looked good. Not a rb savant, but Mattison didn't look all that dynamic. He didn't look even better than Boone. No idea why they drafted him as high as they did. At best, he looks Cook lite. But the sample size is small, so maybe he will be decent at this level.

Mattison also had a couple receptions and looked right in place with the starters... Believe he picked up a blitz or 2 also... Just looked professional...

I think Mattison is very impressive. Our #3 RB should be a dependable blocker as both Cook and Mattison could be 3 down backs. We need Mattison's durability and versatility in case Cook gets dinged.....as if that would happen. Lol

Ham is a roster lock. It looks like the Vikings plan to use a lot of 2 back sets with the fullback blocking or being used for misdirection.

I don't see it as being a tough call. Ham is the FB, and I don't see us keeping more than one. At RB, Cook and Mattison are the clear top two.
So the only position in doubt is RB3, where it's either Abdullah or Boone. Last season, Boone played more snaps on offense (36 vs 9), but Ameer played more ST (86 to 26). Zimmer hates fumbles, so Ameer may have fumbled away his roster spot Friday night. If he has another fumble in preseason, I'd say it'll be Boone.
Also, Boone costs less than Abdullah.

Outside of the long run I thought Henderson looked better then Boone, both played hard... Also both are easy moves to the PS... If I really needed a guy to run between the tackles 20+ times in a game Boone would be the better choice... If I needed a guy to replace an injured Cook I think other 2 would fit better...

Crazy thought... Maybe you move Ham back to RB and keep Blasingame at FB? Hit me today that is an option...

I would not be shocked to see Ham replaced with Blasingame. It all depends on his blocking and ability to play ST. Ham is average at best in everything he does. FBs in general are bottom of the roster players as the FB position is being phased out all over the league. Even TEs's can move into the backfield and fill in a FB in a jam.

Only if they move Ham back to RB... Ham is not going anywhere... Vikings converted him to FB from RB... Vikings have packages designed for Ham... Ham plays a loy of 3rd down back as it is..

Didn't the Vikings carry 5 RBs and 1 FB last season? My thought is they carry 4 this year and 1 FB, especially if they want to run more and be a balanced offense. Cook has difficulty staying healthy, which is another reason we need an extra RB. Related question is how many TEs do we keep with Conklin showing well in camp. If we keep 4 TEs that might affect the FB position
