I like Kirk a lot and have been in the camp of resigning him for a year or two on a modest deal but after reflecting on the last 7 games, I say what for? There are two reasons to bring Kirk back. 1) if you think the team can still compete for a SB in 24/25. Thatβs a pipe dream. If not for the crap win in Vegas, this team loses 7 straight to end the season. The roster is bare and needs to be rebuilt. Use the money for Kirk to sign guys coming off their first contracts especially IOL and DL. Our lines are a joke. 2) keep Kirk so you donβt have to rush a rookie. That makes sense but you can find a cheaper placeholder than Kirk. Kirk on a modest deal is still $30-35mm a year. Get a vet for $10-15mm to hold down the fort until our number 1 pick is ready. And if the pick is Pannix or Nix then those guys need to start right away, theyβre 25.
This team has been hurt by years of bad drafting and poor cap management. We should have ripped the band aid two years ago but tried to run it back and stay competitive while rebuilding. It hasnβt worked. Kirk has been a good QB for the Vikings and a great guy but this team should make decisions today for a SB in two years and that means letting Kirk go.

Totally agree. It feels like a passive rebuild to count on Kirk again to win many regular season games. Since I know that is easy for them and rebuild Both lines of scrimmage is too hard-I kinda expect that uninspired direction.
The tradition of playoff bounces round 1 would perpetuate.
A more aggressive and real turn by this organization would be draft your QB now while the crop is very good. He starts with lower cap hit, and hopefully a bigger more powerful interior line in front of him than Kirk had plus some space-eating DTβs via FA or draft who can actually command double teams.

It's hard to believe that the team will pony up the money that you know Cousins will demand. We could low ball him, or we could demand the no-trade clause be removed, but in the end, I think it will be a standoff.
I think KOC and Kwesi are halfway through their contracts. The competitive re-build strategy probably gets tossed, and now, we have to take a harsher road.

If he wants more then 25 million a year, he can pound sand. We need to keep the team around him or it doesn't matter.

Iβd like to see what heβs willing to play for tbh. I canβt see him taking $25M, but depending how he structures his contract, it may be wise to keep him. I do think you get a higher probability of getting success out of a rookie QB if they can learn from a great QB (not a journeyman vet).
Also, keep in mind if we move on from Cousins & Hunter, barring trading JJ or trading down in round 1, we likely only get 2 picks that would be day 1 starters this year , and round 1 would be a QB.

Kirk has a 28 million void hit next year, the vikes can actually resign him to a two year contract and increase their cap space next year. Regardless of if they do that, they have to draft a QB in the first round next year.

Wondering who these QB vets that will play for 10-15 million are? There really aren't any. Brissett at 8m, Heinicke at 7m. You're really scraping the barrel there and might as well roll with Mullens or grab a cast-off like Wentz or Trubisky. Good luck selling tickets for that.
With all this cap room you would then have who would you sign as free agents that are young and impactful enough to make a difference? The DL free agents are all around 30 or older unless you want to get into the Mdubuike sweepstakes. Maybe some DEs like Brian Burns or Chase Young. Interior oline? Jonah Jackson at guard, but he's not much better than what we got-if at all. Center? Connor Williams and that's about it.
Having cap room is the easy part. Finding out the players who can really shape a franchise above a replacement value level is much, much more difficult.
FWIW, I still think with a healthy Kirk this team wins 3-5 more games this year. With the lousy qb play in the league this year, his value is going to go up.

At a cool $2 million he is a steal. We will be hard pressed to find a guy who will beat him in a genuine competition for a roster spot. Why pay an extra $10 towards a guy who comes in half assed expecting to be benched anyways? Why go through the shit show at the position, or subject a promising rookie to it? Who wouldn't like a young QB trying to emulate Mullens success without the mistakes? I like the idea of him being the bridge because it's building off of production. Nick's performance should be the baseline for how we want new guys to perform. Even from a non starter perspective, I sure as hell don't want Hall to "have" his job, I want him to EARN it with production day to day...

28 million void year next year, you could re-sign him at 30 for two years throw the void year into 2027 and actually lower your cap hit for next year. He is the bridge QB. If you let him go and bring a a QB for over two million, you're at 30 mill for next year at the QB position anyway.

One playoff win in 6 years.
Heβs a nice guy, hard working, smart, tough , and can really sling the football.
Heβs 36, coming off of a severe injury and has never won a thing when it counts.
Itβs time.
