Wife got a cancer diagnosis last week (lymphoma) and they called today and they meant lipoma (fatty mass) as radiologist used dictation software that picked up wrong term.

Glad it turned out in her favor, but that's horrible to put you both through that experience for several days.

The state of our Healthcare System is a wreck. When you have to go into surgery and mark yourself before going under to verify you and the surgeon are on the same page, well kinda concerns you.

And we thought crappy phone connections and spell check software was a problem!
Good stuff for her health (relative), bad signs ahead when AI-assisted surgeries rule the medical industry.

Proof reading seems to be a lost art in these days of spell check. It's rampant. AI still can't detect this kind of error, yet people rely on it. Even major news feeds are full of these glitches as they rush to be the first to publish...
Where I worked as an orderly in a surgery center, they did an ad campaign with billboards and flyers, that read, "You could save up to 40% *LESS* by having your surgery done here.
CEO's and doctors didn't notice the error, but it caught my eye immediately. But the billboards were already up, and the flyers were being handed out.
I told my CEO you should have run this one by me before you spent thousands of dollars making our company a laughing stock.

Sometimes it's funny in a macabre sort of way, like the headline "Miners refuse to work after death".

I work in healthcare and that's rough. Boy I can't imagine the mental anguish you both went through, especially her. I'm glad that wasn't the case though. Sheesh!

Wow….I’m so sorry you had to go through that.
Talk about stress.

That is a JCAHO (conditions of participation) requirement. It is a safety measure put in place because surgeons were operating without proper insight to the site/extremity/what have you.
It was put in place shortly after my clinical affiliation in an outpatient setting whereupon I treated a patient who had an ACL reconstruction ON THE OPPOSITE KNEE!
This is a needed and requisite pre operative necessity in order to “Do No Harm”.
