Mahomes will have a 50 Million Cap hit, Allen almost 40 cap hit in 23, Watson 56M. Burrow and Herbert will be there on their next contract shortly. You are implying none of these QBβs, that are considered the best now, will ever win a SB again because they are on a 2nd contract??? Because they are all going to have cap hits = or higher than anything Kirk makes.
What gets lost in the QB cap situation is that the league has been in transition from QBβs like Brady, A Rodgers, Manning, Brees, Big Ben (guys who have dominated their sport for years to the new group of QBβs like Mahomes, Burrow etc.). This created a window where young QBβs could have more success than normal because A) the previously elite QBβs were either gone or on decline while at the same time B) new QBβs didnβt cost as much so you could load up around them. But that window is closing as many of these new Elite QBβs are just moving into their primes and are not anywhere near decline. And like it or not, they are likely to dominate their sport for the next decade just like the their predecessors.
Winning breeds confidence and no position is confidence more important to success or failure that QB. Because winning not only creates confidence for a QB, but winning elevates the play of everyone around you. Do you think the reason so many QBβs failed from 2000-2015 was because there was a void of talent completely? No, a good portion of QBβs that washed out had to do with what team/coach drafted them, how good or bad those teams were and what winning or losing did to their psyche! It is going to be harder for young QBβs to find success because competition will be fierce and the cap hits less emphasized because theyβll all be in that boat.
That isnβt to say we shouldnβt draft a QBβ¦we absolutely need to. But A) I think success rates of young QBβs is about to start falling, B) I think the idea you can only win a SB with a cheap QB is ridiculous, C). I think trying to bring in a QB with a Defense that is utter disarray is a recipe for disaster. Purdy likely is a total bust without a phenomenal defense to make his road to success easier. My plan would be to draft a QB in 24 high and look to transition to him in 25 when heβs had a year to learn snd has a D that can take pressure off of him. Obviously with that statement Iβm implying I think it will take more than a year to rebuild the D.
