Whether Cousins stayed here or went elsewhere, I think he wanted to play out his next contract and retire. I normally like Randy but think heβs off on this one. Cousins is smart enough to know if a team is going to draft a 1st or 2nd rd QBβ¦ to groom to be the successor, they arenβt waiting 3-4 years to play him allowing Cousins to play out his next contract no matter how well heβs playing. Itβs not based on insecurityβ¦ itβs a reality.
I canβt blame him for wanting to go to a team that would allow him to retire on his termsβ¦. Who wouldnβt.

This is also why I donβt think Cousins was going to stay in MN. I donβt think regarding of drafting a WB, we were willing to commit to him for 4 more years - not talking about the money, just in general

2 weeks ago they all told us the Cousins departure was all about the guaranteed money.
Our media is the worst. Getting to the point that you can't believe a damn thing the put out for consumption.

I think both can be true. Term length and guaranteed money often go hand in hand. The rookie QB deal - at Cousins age and coming off the injury, heβd have to have his head in the sand to not expect a team to prepare for the future.

It's both because the guaranteed money most likely means that he's the starter for at least two years. Drafting the QB of the future for the Vikes was the reason they wouldn't go beyond 1 year of guaranteed money. So he left because of the QB of the future which lead to less guaranteed money. Atlanta drafting a QB threw him off., because for the first time in his career, the guaranteed money may not secure his starting spot for the next two years.

IDK, if I'm in Cousins' position/age having just signed a huge 4-year deal, I am expecting the team to go all in for at least a couple of years to win a Super Bowl. IOW, to not bypass players in the draft who could have had an big, immediate impact THIS season in order to draft my replacement. Teams do need to have an eye toward the future, but the timing is a bad look in regard to your commitment to your newly signed QB. Even worse, the Falcons were apparently not transparent about their plans with Cousins.

But from a people skills, team-building and simply human decency perspective, they should have kept their most important player in the loop. Just because a team/company has a legal prerogative, doesn't mean they have to be a$$holes about it.

Personally, I thought ATL wasn't going to draft a QB until 2025; but, Cousins hasn't earned the right to retire without a younger challenger for his job and he should have known that

Every NFL player has competition. A 36yo QB coming off of injury should not expect to be an exception. Particularly one that is new to a team. If he didnβt expect that, heβs clueless. If we are talking team-building, as a player, Iβm applauding that Mr.QB is not an exception. We are not talking about a Tom Brady level track history here.

The cousins signing was idiotic and than I think they realized it and went out and drafted Pennix as protection. Why any one thinks that team is winning more that 8 games next year is beyond me.

I thought this concept was simple, but maybe not. Certainly every position should have competition. That doesn't preclude the team from being upfront and open about their intensions, expectations and the nature of that competition with the guy they are pursuing to lead their team. There is really no good reason not be forthcoming about their intensions unless they were intentionally trying to deceive Cousins to increase their chances of signing him, which IMO would be a pretty sh!tty way to start a relationship, even a business relationship.

I can give you 100,000,000 reasons why it was a shocking move and why any sane person would question why they would spend that kind of draft capital on another QB.

Why does he care if they draft a QB? By the time his current contract will have ended, he will have fleeced three NFL franchises out of roughly $400 million to deliver jack shit.
He can write a book on how to parlay two playoff wins into almost half a billion dollars
