Don't know if coincidence or what, but Bailey seemed pretty sound until we changed the long snapper. After that move....the wheels fell off. My problem with Dan was two years ago the excuse was the holder, this year, the long snapper. At some point it's just time to realize he's not as good as he used to be. I'd just like to get lucky and be one of those teams that can find a good kicker without wasting a draft pick or if it is a draft pick, a late seventh rounder. Spending 5th and 6th round picks on kickers that don't pan out kinda blows

Seems like a lot of people call them valuable when it suits them and worthless when it suits them. What is a waste is spending one on a specialist and then not giving them the same chance you give other positions selected in those rounds.

Year one looked like a smart pick though Now just have to cut or renegotiate down Shamar and Colquitt to get in the green for cap space then the real moves come. Cutting both clears them down to even 180 mil cap. Still interested in what final number will be. OTC is projecting things off 183.97 mil and SPOTRAC 185. OTC spent a large chunk of the offseason not really projecting a cap making their numbers wonky. Everyone is assuming 182 to 185.

Blaming everyone else but the kicker is like falling in the snow and getting mad at the shovel.

Different story per his agent.............. Jordan Woy @jordanwoy Although the Vikings wanted to keep Dan Bailey, we were unable to agree to a renegotiated contract. They did not want to pay his current contract so he will be a free agent as of today. Not necessarily different, I'm sure the Vikings would have kept him for competition if he agreed to restructure to essentially a min contract and waive future guarantees.

I think Zimmer is Kryptonite for any kicker... It's so strong he made Anderson miss in '98, ya'all know that game. Or we are cursed ?

I just donβt get why Kickers have been such an issue for years now. For college sports I'm an Alabama fan. For years under Nick Saban, it seemed like place kicker was a huge weakness. Fans held their collective breath every time the team lined up for a field goal (see the "Kick 6"). Year after year you have the top-rated recruiting class in the nation and you can't find a reliable kicker? Sometimes it seems as if the stars have to align just right for these apparent head cases to perform at a high level. Alabama finally found a star last year. Will Reichard (sophomore) was perfect on all scoring attempts with 84 PATs and 14 made field goals (with a long of 52 yards IIRC). It will be interesting to see if he can back it up next season.

The kicking situation is on Zimmer, the HC has to be able to respond to adversity and not be reactive, which is the job of the fans and media. Zimmer should have been the voice of reason and kept Carlson instead of getting rid of a 5th round pick after two games. I wonder if Zimmer was trying to be the voice of reason during the draft to not use a 5th round pick on a kicker.

Minnesota Vikings @vikings The #Vikings have released K Dan Bailey. As a fan of watching RedZone on Sundays, there is a lot of bad kicking out there with a lot of teams; especially with extra points. Certainly not going to fault The Purple from A) cutting a relative expensive and B) under performing kicker. As a Zimmer fan, yeah, I'll go along with the "impatient special teams" aspect of his leadership. But Bailey isn't worth the money. I'd hope The Purple throw bodies at the problem. I hope Spielman doesn't throw a draft pick at the hole in the roster. Bring in multiple college free agents, as well as kickers from previous drafts. Run them through the "NFL Gauntlet" with training camp and preseason, and let the most mentally tough kicker win. All these guys can kick a 40 yd field goal through the uprights without a pass rush or crowd. Put them threw a meat grinder; let the best man win. Give me a guy who is automatic from 40 yards in and I'll take my chances at the rest.
