I don't get Lamar on this. He has been given permission to seek a contract from another team which the Ravens may or may not match. If it's high enough (what Lamar wants), I see the Ravens taking the 2 first round picks and letting him go. This is probably an example of why a player shouldn't be their own agent. They don't have the connections with other teams and there is a strong tendency to take the negotiations part of the job more personally since you are directly negotiating the nitty gritty and both sides are seeking the best deal for them.

Lamar reminds me a lot of Daunte. A very talented guy who isn't very bright. Daunte blew out his knee and wouldn't rehab with the team and then became his own agent. Ended up burning his bridges in Minny and then became a journeyman scrub. The Ravens offered a $200mm deal with $125mm guaranteed. Just shut up and sign, Lamar. You're making an ass out of yourself.

I think what killed Daunte's career besides the injury was the Moss trade. Moss made Culpepper a lot better than he was.

Does anybody know the ballpark figure (perhaps in %) that the Sports Agents get in NFL contract management?
That's one thing for sure to not like here in his dealings....he has no real guidance to set himself up all for saving just thousands of $ on the millions. Yeh, not so smart on the biz end like mentioned DC was past here.

That's not much considering they can get so much more money from negotiating endorsements and the like. They are also masters in manipulation. There's no way in hell Lamar is going to make more money without an agent.

Moss was traded after the 2004 season and Daunte blew up his knee midway through 2005 and never played a game again for the vikings. So he didn't play a lot of games in Minnesota without Moss but no doubt that Randy made him look better than he was in the earlier years.

I'm available at .5%, Lamar!

The radio and tv commentators like to jump on this "he is his own agent" and problems with it. Do they put any proof out there? No it's just talking heads who have no idea what is being said during the negotiations. I have no problem if he wants to be his own agent-why does it bother others and make him "dumb"?

There was a time period before the start of the new year where an agent could contact other teams but players could not. Since he is both an agent and player he could not contact other teams. Other QBs were being signed in this period removing several teams from signing him. So he put him behind several other QBs looking for teams. Now the number of teams looking for a QB and willing give up two 1st round picks is very low. He is now looking for Baltimore to trade him where the team may get less than two 1st round picks.

If I were an owner/GM/head coach, my thoughts on this would be, Lamar is a professional QB. He is not a professional agent. He should be solely focused on becoming the best QB he can be and an agent should be focused on the business side of things. Iβve always felt this way, even when John Stockton was representing himself in the NBA. He didnβt win a championship.

An agentβs commission varies, based on the sport he represents. Generally, a sports agent earns between 4 and 10 percent of an athleteβs playing contract, though some leagues place limits on what percentage an agent can charge in commission. For example, the National Football League states that an agent can't receive more than 3 percent of player salaries. The National Basketball Association places the limit at 3 percent too. Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League don't have any limits on agent commissions. A large part of an agentβs job involves finding, negotiating and securing endorsement contracts for his clients. An agent typically earns 10 to 20 percent of a clientβs endorsement contract, though the exact amount may vary by sport and type of contract. An agent may also set up paid meetings and appearances, for which he'll typically take between 10 and 20 percent of the earnings.
