Wolfson said issues with physical. Β Pivot to Clowney or Floyd? This could be the reason that Za'Darius Smith hasn't been released yet! $5.05 million of his salary is guaranteed on March 17, so Kwesi has to make a quick decision on this. π€

They needed to delay his signing regardless to make a couple other moves.

Z faded badly and didn't do jack the entire second half.Β I think the Vikings are the second team to realize he is on his way down.Β Β Hunter outplayed him in every facet of the game last season while learning a new position.Β Β Z still had good pressure numbers the second half, the sacks just really fell off. And the argument for Davenport is he has good pressure numbers, just no sacks. Hmmmm......weird.

The argument for Davenport is that Z wants out!Β Β Sure, in the last week since he said he wanted out. The prior two months people were clamoring to move on for exactly the reason Shawn said. I'd have zero issues moving on from Z. I just get a kick out of the mental gymnastics people do to make themselves fall out of love with a player so quickly. Only to fall into love with a similar or lesser player for a replacement.

I'm fine with either....my biggest issue with Z is his age and injury history. The older you get, the slower it is to recover and the bigger drop off in performance. Z I think will constantly be plagued by nagging injuries. For what we are paying him, I thought we got our monies worth, but he definitely was a different player after the injury. He was still good, just not dominant and I wonder what another year older will do to his performance when he gets banged up again.
But from what I'm seeing as available vs. the cost to keep him, I don't see many upgrades available. I have no doubts the motivation behind him wanting out is Z wants a bigger payday following last years performance. I don't think he wants to be traded....I think he wants to be cut so he can renegotiate a new deal !

Is Davenport viewed as an OLB in a 3 - 4 scheme? I am thinking he is more of a pass-rush specialist that plays defensive line only......not a replacement for Z. Has anyone read for sure that he was brought in to replace Z ? A pass rush of Hunter, Z and Davenport would be scary good!

I think the assumption is he was signed to replace Z because A) Z wants out and B) we can't afford to keep both. To my knowledge, he was a DE in NO but I have seen him play from standup position often in clips. I could certainly be wrong on this, but I was always been under the impression that NO ran a 4/3 but maybe they ran some hybrid looks as well. Somebody else can probably confirm that or correct me, but regardless I believe he is listed as an OLB on all Vikings reports.

Looking at this another way.... would you trade Z for Davenport straight up? I'm not sure I would. Smith was our best D-line presence last year on a consistent basis. Early teams focused on Hunter and he shined. Later in the year he was the one with the TE and running back on his side and still created more issues than anyone else on the line. I get it from a cap standpoint but this guy seems like an injury risk and under performer risk. Teams focused blocking packages on Hunter all year Hunter just started winning v the doubles the 2nd half of the year. Also teams tend to run to there left more often when Hunter is on the field meaning RDE/ROLB get a lot more action in the running game then normal. Man... you are on "team Hunter" aren't you. Hunter's not been able to use his upper body to disengage anyone since the neck surgery. He was handled one on one a lot this last season. Smith always had the RB and TE lined up where he was. That was the reason they were moving him into the middle late in the year. I watched the games too...

That was the reason they were moving him into the middle late in the year. I watched the games too... You must be watching the wrong games then. Z is not an especially good run defender either. I will agree teams lined up TE on the left more then is common against us but a large part of that is that teams ran to our right side of the defense more often then is common. Watch game 1 to game 17 and Hunter got the most attention of any front 7 player we had the entire season. Most of those inside rushes were on stunts and there were some snaps they tried getting Hunter, Z, and Wonnum on the field at the same time. Hunter was getting a sack a game before he tore his pec in 21'. Hunter had a better 2nd half last year then Z had a 1st half of the year. Sneaky bastard even got to double digit sacks. We can't get a deal done to trade Z and the word is teams are calling about Hunter. Biggest problem there is Hunter costs 5M more to trade then keep vs the cap right now. Bluntly Hunter looked like the only guy playing D in the playoff game vs the Giants.

Be interesting to see the actual numbers as Murphy deal came in lower then reported at first.
