Reason he is high on most free agent lists was 32 QB hurries. Smith was good half a season and now pushing his way out for more money. What we have a bad habit of is using FA for quick fixes that slows the growth of younger players and our rebuild, plus takes from our cap. If Davenport plays well he is gone next year. If injured, misses lots of time or does not play up to his salary then he is also gone. That $13M is going to kill our cap this year and could have been used to improve this team for multiple years. It looks like GM and coaches look short term which gives them job security. This is the correct narrative. They have to not look they are tanking the season because the majority of sports fans are impatient. Davenport is on a proven contract and he is banking on himself. They need serious capital for JJ and Darrisaw who are both going to break the bank. I fully support getting rid of the old guys with the big cap hits and resetting the balance sheet for 2024. Which is why I donβt get this move. A one year rental at $13mm? The team was better signing a young CB with a front loaded deal if they wanted to use 2023 cap. That CB would then be around for 24-27 with a light cap bit to sign other guys. Davenport is either going to suck and be gone or be really good and sign away.

I think the plan when the signed Z was for him to be a 2 year player. We got one year out of him and now he wants out so they signed him as a one year filler. It's a high risk signing on both sides. He could totally flop in a new defense (and God knows our D hasn't been good for awhile) which hurts his next contract or he could play great and have it work out wonderfully. On our side he's talented but has underachieved and struggled with Injuries. Do you really want to commit long term to a guy you don't know for sure can A stay healthy and B flourish in a new scheme? We signed him basically to be a guy that can fill Z's shoes with a lot of pressure and be somewhat cap neutral with trading Z. My guess is we are hoping we can take a day 2 player from a Z trade and turn them into a starter and have plenty of cap space in 24 to see what we really want to do long term. Not the worst move, but not the best either. It's like both sides did the other a favor.

The 2 contracts the team has agreed with has them back in the hole almost as much with the cap as before Kendricks was cut.

Agree SkolVike folks here are hypocrites every same year same B.S with folks here. Like they know how to run a team no matter who they sign folks will cry here doesn't matter who the Vikings sign I'm glad folks here know how to be a GM. It's all about next year where we won't be In debt. There is a very interesting (*and very uncommon*) word that came to mind reading some of these posts. Look it up, and tell me if you think it fits: ultracrepedarian

Looking at this another way.... would you trade Z for Davenport straight up? I'm not sure I would. Smith was our best D-line presence last year on a consistent basis. Early teams focused on Hunter and he shined. Later in the year he was the one with the TE and running back on his side and still created more issues than anyone else on the line.
I get it from a cap standpoint but this guy seems like an injury risk and under performer risk.

Z faded badly and didn't do jack the entire second half. I think the Vikings are the second team to realize he is on his way down.
Hunter outplayed him in every facet of the game last season while learning a new position.

I posted a stat earlier that he is in the top 10 in pressures over the past few years. I get it that pressures aren't sacks; but, they aren't meaningless. Making a QB throw early leads to incompletions and making them move in the pocket could flush them to sacks by other defenders.

Teams focused blocking packages on Hunter all year Hunter just started winning v the doubles the 2nd half of the year. Also teams tend to run to there left more often when Hunter is on the field meaning RDE/ROLB get a lot more action in the running game then normal.

I donβt think Z was the same player after the injury, but he still played well he just wasnβt dominant. My concern with Z is injuries slow older players more than young ones. Itβs harder to play thru and takes longer to heal and the impact of play is typically more noticeable the older you are.
That said, I donβt think the Vikings had any intention of getting rid of Z until he opened his mouth. I think Z is still the better playerβ¦.but if we can swap cap hit with Davenport essentially and pick up a 2nd or 3rd for Zβ¦ well Iβm just fine with that. If we flat out cut himβ¦ then we are fools.

They made it a priority to stabilize both lines and the CB position.
Itβs the right way to roster construct.
They need to somehow add an interior d-lineman next.

Not sure how we stabilized our interior lines? Our O-Line is soft snd we brought back the same player that created a hole, and on DL we we took a position that wasnβt a problem and replaced a capable player for what Iβd expect would be a million more snd a pick so itβs a wash. What we didnβt address is the Interior DL which lost its best player and has everyone aside from Otomeyo and maybe Red playing out of position. Bradbury contract was fair but did little to improve/Stabilize our OL

Appears his contract is still in the works and that's why we've seen nothing in the books.
