In 1985 they wanted Kosar, settled for Doleman
in 2002 they wanted Ryan Sims, got Bryant McKinnie
in 2003 they dropped 2 slots because McCombs wanted to save bonus money and picked Kevin Williams
This year first option was Maye, got JJ.
Sometimes your second choice turns out great.

Kevin Williams was the first choice, they just got him a bit later.
Tom Pellisaro says the Vikings were never going to tade up to 4 or 5 and were resolved to call the Giants bluff. If that is true not sure that Maye was their choice.
He also says they had McCarthy ahead of Penx but they were very close and would have been happy with either. Said Atlanta stunning everyone prompted Viking move up a pick to make sure they got JJM.

I just didn't see Maye as the fit or the target that JJM is for KO. I like the patience by Kwesi, but you can only be so patient for so long sometimes, otherwise you miss out and, yes, Atlanta throwing a curveball in, you have to make a move. I really like how it played out. Yes, it would have been ideal sticking to the 11th pick, but too many teams needed a QB and the Jets were willing to trade. |

Pellisero was saying they wouldn't trade to 4 or 5 for McCarthy once Maye was gone. |

If you listen to Tom Pellisaro's interview, he said the Vikings were trying to trade up to 3 for Maye. When New England didn't go for it the next choice was JJM but the Vikings didn't want to move into the 4 or 5 spot for JJM. They had to sweat it out hoping the Giants wouldn't take him. They felt strongly that Tennessee was going to stay and draft another position. Then when Atlanta took a QB at 8 it started getting interesting because they knew Chicago wouldn't be a trade partner. Then when the Bears took Odunze the Vikings made their move with the Jets.

Interestingly, we have the Dallas Turner move to look at as a willing to overpay scenario vs the JJ pick as a refusal to overpay. Both in the same draft. Hopefully both calls were the correct ones. |

It is not hindsight, they loved Maye over JJ. Sure we got a DE that could be a stud, but in the end you need an ELITE QB to get it done. So if he is a bust it doesn't matter, if Maye is a bust it doesn't matter either. I want him to succeed, I want rings, not ring, rings. Only time will tell. He is a winner there is no doubt about that. But if he is a bust, we waste 2-3 years finding out and waste precious prime years of the young talented studs on this roster as well. |

Vikings got most value out of first three rounds per analtics
Coming out of the draft feeling like a winner is almost as much about feeling like you got great value out of your picks as the picks themselves, especially from a fan perspective. There are a lot of different feelings about the Minnesota Vikingsβ draft performance, but according to the analtics, they had the best draft in the league through the first three rounds.
From statistics from Warren Sharp on X (formerly Twitter), the Vikings got more value out of their picks in the first three rounds than any other team in the league. Sharp calculated this by comparing the DCOE, or Draft Capital over Expected) comparing where a player was expected to be drafted and the capital expected to be used to get him versus the actual investment.
According to DCOE, the Vikings picks over the first three rounds, quarterback J.J. McCarthy and EDGE Dallas Turner, netted the Vikings a score of 3.6, more than a half-point better than the next closest team, their NFC North rivals Detroit.
Detractors of the Vikingsβ draft would say that the team gave up too much in order to get McCarthy and Turner, but the data paints a different picture. That picture becomes even better when you consider the amount of salary cap space the Vikings are projected to have next season and the compensatory picks they could receive for the free agents they lost in 2024.

We'll never really know if they would have traded for the right price... but if NE loved Maye has much as Vikes... why would they trade? |

I am confident McCarthy will be a better pro QB than Maye so love how this played out.
Maye has too many accuracy problems and hasn't finsished seasons well. Really don't know how Maye would react to a 'big' game because he hasn't played one.

They wanted Maye and had to settle for JJ because they didn't wanna roll the dice, per usual for this franchise. If Maye is a stud and they win some more Bowls, then that will suck. If JJ is coached up by KOC and turns into a stud that would be wonderful and yes we got Turner too for not trading and still have the 1st next year. It really is a crap shoot. JJ seems to have a lot of passion and heart. So no doubt in my mind he will give his all, but will it be enough, only time will tell. |
